Jon Pardi Pays Tribute to Joe Diffie With ‘Pickup Man’ at 2020 CMA Awards

Jon Pardi paid tribute to country star Joe Diffie, who died in March at age 61 following complications from COVID-19, at the 2020 CMA Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 11).

In a energetic performance sponsored by Chevy, Pardi rocked some red cowboy boots, blue jeans and a beige cowboy hat for his rendition of “Pickup Man.” Behind him, the name “Diffie” flashed across the screen, made up of photos of the late star.

Diffie had 17 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the ‘90s. The singer, who recently celebrated his 25th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, is best known for No. 1s such as  “Home,” “If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets),” “Third Rock From The Sun,” “Bigger Than The Beatles” and, of course, “Pickup Man.”

The 2020 CMA Awards aired live from Nashville’s Music City Center with an audience sitting at socially distanced tables. Country icon Reba McEntire hosted for the fifth time, while Darius Rucker made his debut as the event’s co-host.
