The track, released on Columbia Records, is the first Adult Pop Songs No. 1 for each artist. While New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 (real name: Joshua Nanai) reigns in his first visit, Derulo leads at last in his 11th appearance. He first ranked on the list exactly 11 years earlier, when his debut hit “Whatcha Say” debuted on the chart dated Nov. 21, 2009. He had reached a previous No. 3 peak with “Want to Want Me” in 2015.
Derulo ends the longest wait for a first Adult Pop Songs No. 1 since Jonas Brothers, whose “Sucker” became their first leader in May 2019, 11 years and one month after their first entry. Among soloists, Derulo wraps the longest run to a first No. 1 since Christina Aguilera, who spanned 12 years and one month between her debut week on the chart and the coronation of Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger,” on which she’s featured, in 2011.
Derulo completes the longest journey to a first Adult Pop Songs No. 1 among solo males, surpassing Justin Timberlake, who took 10 years and two-and-a-half months from his first appearance (apart from *NSYNC) to his first No. 1, “Mirrors,” in 2013. (*NSYNC first reached the chart in 1998.)
“It’s important to reinvent yourself as much as possible, otherwise people just get tired of it,” Derulo recently told Billboard. He added with a laugh, “I’ve tried everything under the sun at least three times.”
“Savage Love” previously topped the Pop Songs airplay chart for four weeks in October, becoming Jawsh 685’s first No. 1 and Derulo’s fifth. The song ruled both the multi-metric Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 charts dated Oct. 17, aided by BTS remixes.
