Aluna Is Curating a Compilation of Remixes by African Artists to Help Take On the AIDS Crisis

News

Aluna has partnered with leading Nigerian record label Mavin Records to curate the upcoming Dance (RED) Saves Lives Vol. III, dropping next year.

The compilation’s first single, a powerful Aluna and Sigag Lauren remix of Nigerian artist Ladipoe’s “Jaiye,” dropped Tuesday in honor of World AIDS Day. Listen to the edit below.

Curated by Aluna and Mavin Records founder and president Don Jazzy, the forthcoming compilation will include tracks by Mavin artists including Rema, Johnny Drille and Crayon and remixed by DJs and producers including Jazzy.

All proceeds from the lead single and compilation will support (RED)’s efforts to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on HIV/AIDS programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Funds raised by the project will be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, up to $10,000. Launched in 2006 by co-founders Bono and Bobby Shriver, RED has raised $650 million for the fight against AIDS in Africa.

“In Africa, even in times of pain and uncertainty, music is a uniting force,” Jazzy says in a statement. “I’m proud that we can use it to bring some lightness and support an important cause at the same time.”

“Being a part of a project like this is incredible,” adds Aluna, “because it gives me the opportunity to showcase that dance music is Black, which is something I’ve been discussing in the dance community, and at the same time raise money for HIV and COVID-19.”

Experts warn that the pandemic may lead to disruptions of services for people living with HIV and those at risk of acquiring HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to roughly 12% of the global population and accounts for approximately 71% of global HIV infections. Scientists predict that COVID-19 could cause AIDS-related deaths to double in 2021, as health systems and prevention and treatment programs are overwhelmed.

“Our goal for this partnership,” says Jennifer Lotito, (RED) President and Chief Operating Officer, “is to have a significant impact on the global health systems that are in need of urgent support.”

Joining the cause is now as easy as pressing play.
