Edgar Barrera spends a fifth week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Songwriters chart (dated Dec. 5), thanks to five writing credits on the latest Hot Latin Songs ranking.
Barrera is the fourth artist to spend at least five weeks atop Latin Songwriters, dating to the list’s launch in June 2019, after Bad Bunny (44 weeks at No. 1), J Balvin (11) and Anuel AA (six).
“Having my name next to Bad Bunny, J Balvin and Anuel AA is surreal,” Barrera tells Billboard. “It’s very rewarding and humbling to share this with artists that I look up to.”
Leading the five tracks is Maluma’s “Hawái” (recently remixed with The Weeknd) at No. 2, after it spent nine weeks at No. 1. Barrera co-wrote the single, which also stands at No. 35 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 (after reaching No. 12), with Maluma, The Weeknd, Chan El Genio, Kevin ADG, Bull Nene, Miky La Sensa, Jowan, Ily Wonder, Juan Camilo Vargas and Keityn.
“I value the process of having many ideas floating in the room as much as when I am writing one-on-one with the artists,” Barrera says. “To me, the common denominator is having an honest relationship with my co-writers and leaving our egos out of the room.”
Here’s a rundown of all five of Barrera’s songwriting credits on the latest Hot Latin Songs chart.
Rank, Artist Billing, Title (co-songwriters in addition to Barrera)
No. 2, Maluma & The Weeknd, “Hawái” (Maluma, The Weeknd, Chan El Genio, Kevin ADG, Bull Nene, Miky La Sensa, Jowan, Ily Wonder, Juan Camilo Vargas, Keityn)
No. 8, Christian Nodal & Angela Aguilar, “Dime Como Quieres” (Christian Nodal)
No. 14, Camilo, “Vida de Rico” (Camilo)
No. 20, Jennifer Lopez & Maluma, “Pa’ Ti” (Maluma, Jennifer Lopez, Elena Rose, Jon The Producer)
No. 24, Christian Nodal, “Aqui Abajo” (Christian Nodal, Rene Humberto Lau Ibarra)
Barrera has tallied 60 songwriting entries on the Hot Latin Songs chart, dating to Samo’s “Sin Ti” (which he co-wrote with Samo and Andres Castro) in 2013. Of those, 10 have reached the top 10, while “Hawái” earned him his first No. 1. He also boasts one top 10 on the Hot 100 as a writer and producer: Ariana Grande and Social House’s “Boyfriend,” which hit No. 8 in August 2019.
Despite the travel restrictions this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Barrera has remained busy, as 12 of his songs have landed on Hot Latin Songs in 2020 alone.
As for crafting future hits while quarantined, Barrera has had to adapt to writing sessions on Zoom and sending voice notes to his collaborators. “When you’re writing in the same room, you get to feel the energy of the other writers and read their body language much better than through a screen,” he says. “But as time passes, we have been able to adapt to our new normal and find creative ways to keep working. Despite all the challenges, I feel that working is what kept me sane during lockdown and took me out of my comfort zone.”
The 14-time Latin Grammy Award winner has also earned three Latin Airplay No. 1s as a songwriter this year (among 12 total): Maluma’s “Que Pena,” with J Balvin, in February, “ADMV” in July and “Hawái” in October.
“I’m especially thankful that Billboard is shining a spotlight on the songwriters who are often overlooked,” Barrera muses. “Because the flow of new music is so vast, it is very challenging to compete with artists even in a songwriting chart. However, I’m lucky to work with artists that value my craft and that trust me in the songwriting process.”
The weekly Latin Songwriters and Latin Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Latin Songs chart; as with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).
